It is obligatory for every Muslim to know what is:

(a) necessarily true

(b) impossible

(c) possible to affirm of both Allah and the prophets (upon whom be peace)

These three categories traditionally subsume some fifty tenets of faith.

The 20 attributes necessarily true of Allah are His

(1) existence: It is obligatory to believe that Allah exists and that there is no doubt in His Existence. He exists without a place. Time does not lapse on Allah.

(2) not beginning; Allah is Eternal; there is no beginning to His Existence. He has existed since before the creation

(3) not ending; Allah is Everlasting; His existence does not come to an end. He does not perish.

(4) self-subsistence: meaning not needing any place or determinant to exist;

(5) dissimilarity to created things; Allah does not resemble the creations.

(6) Oneness: Allah is One without any partners. He is One in His Self, His Attributes, and His Actions.

(7) omnipotent power; Allah has Power over everything.

(8) will; Everything that occurs in this world is by the Will of Allah.

(9) knowledge; Allah knows about all things before they occur. Allah knows what happened, what is currently happening and what is going to happen in the future.

(10) life; Allah is alive without a soul, skin, or heart. His Life is not similar to ours. He is alive and does not die.

(11) hearing; Allah hears all what is hearable, without an ear or any other organ.

(12) sight; Allah sees all what is seeable, without a pupil or any other organ.

(13) speech; Allah’s Speech is without a tongue or lip. His Speech is not in a language, Arabic or anything else. His Speech does not resemble the speech of the humans.

(14) almighty;

(15) all-willing;

(16) all-knowing;

(17) living;

(18) all-hearing;

(19) all-seeing;

(20) and speaking—through His attributes of power, will, knowledge, life, hearing, sight, and speech, not merely through His being

The 20 attributes necessarily impossible of Allah

(a) (21–40) are the opposites of the previous twenty, such as nonexistence, beginning, ending, and so on.

(b) The one attribute merely possible of Allah (41) is that He may create or destroy any possible thing.

The attributes of the prophets (upon whom be peace) similarly fall under the three headings

(a) The four attributes necessarily true of the prophets (42–45) are telling the truth, keeping their trust, conveying to mankind everything they were ordered to, and intelligence.

(b) The four attributes necessarily impossible of them (46–49) are the opposites of the previous four, namely lying, treachery, concealing what they were ordered to reveal, and feeblemindedness .

(c) The one attribute possible of them (50) is any human state that does not detract from their rank, such as eating, sleeping, marrying, and illnesses not repellant to others; although Allah protected them from every offensive physical trait and everything unbecoming them, keeping them from both lesser sins and enormities, before their prophethood and thereafter.
